At a press conference in Birżebbuġa, the PN explains how a government led by Alex Borg will increase Malta’s value in the maritime sector and remove the gas tanker that Labour placed in Marsaxlokk Bay Behind us is yet another broken promise by the Labour Party in government. A gas tanker that Labour placed in Marsaxlokk Bay, and which was meant to be removed after three years. Thirteen years later, however, it is still there. The Mediterranean Maritime Fuel Hub project will not only remove this tanker from Marsaxlokk Bay, but will once again place Malta in a very strong position in the maritime sector. During a press conference in Birżebbuġa, in front of the gas tanker, and in the presence of Partit Nazzjonalista candidates on the Fifth District Toni Bezzina, Duncan Borg Myatt, Stefan Caruana, Oliver Cini, Owen Sciberras and Stanley Zammit, Partit Nazzjonalista candidate Ivan Castillo continued to explain the project launched yesterday by the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista, Alex Borg. Ivan Castillo said that the Mediterranean Maritime Fuel Hub, which will be located at Hurd’s Bank, will have two main aims: First, to remove the gas tanker that a Labour Government placed in Marsaxlokk Bay and move it more than 20km away from the coast, so that the residents of this locality, as well as those of Birżebbuġa and other surrounding areas, can enjoy A Fresh Start and live with greater peace of mind Second, to give A Fresh Start to our country’s economy by providing essential services to vessels passing close to our shores He explained how our islands lie on the highway of many large vessels. The vision of the Partit Nazzjonalista is to once again place our country at the forefront of maritime services by offering bunkering for vessels powered by LNG and whose route is already close to Malta. This project will generate €450 million in its first three years of operation, create around 150 new quality jobs, and open up hundreds of other opportunities through indirect employment created as a result of this project. While this will be a very important project that will make a major contribution to the economy, it will not create any new pressure on land, and no new burden on land infrastructure, because the project will be entirely at sea. This service will be future-proof because, while the plan is to start by supplying vessels with LNG — currently the fuel being used by vessels — in the future, at no additional cost, it will be able to transition to other fuels that may be required. Ivan Castillo spoke about the extremely positive reaction from bunkering operators to this project and said that the MMFH will further strengthen our country as one of the best in maritime services. He said that the Partit Nazzjonalista is reassuring the residents of Marsaxlokk, Birżebbuġa and the surrounding areas that before the end of the first legislature of a new PN Government, the tanker that a Labour Government placed in their bay will be removed. Ivan Castillo also stated that placing the LNG tanker offshore would mean greater energy stability. “A PN Government will give Marsaxlokk A Fresh Start, the maritime sector A Fresh Start, and our economy A Fresh Start.” 06.05.2026
