With a clear vision and well-studied measures, a Nationalist Government will improve the quality of life of workers, students and young people; the Partit Nazzjonalista believes in a quality of life that is not measured by numbers alone The quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people is not measured only by economic figures, but by whether people are living better in their everyday lives: how much time they have for their family, how much peace of mind they enjoy, how many open spaces they have where they can breathe, whether they have health services that work, quality education and real opportunities for the future. This was the main message delivered by Partit Nazzjonalista candidates Joseph Grech, Justin Schembri and Bernice Bonello during a press conference in which they spoke about the PN’s vision for a better quality of life for workers, students and young people. They said that, when in government, the Partit Nazzjonalista always viewed the economy as a means to improve people’s lives. It was the PN that attracted to Malta economic niches that remain pillars of the Maltese economy to this day, including gaming, financial services, aviation, pharmaceuticals and the maritime sector. Today, the Partit Nazzjonalista is once again paving the way for new niches that create more wealth, quality jobs and new opportunities. A clear example is the project announced this morning by Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg: the Mediterranean Maritime Fuel Hub in part of Hurd’s Bank, a project that will strengthen Malta as a maritime centre, create new jobs and add value to the Maltese economy for today’s and tomorrow’s generations. Joseph Grech spoke about workers’ quality of life and said that, although the Government has spent years speaking about a strong economy, workers are feeling the burden of greater stress, traffic, the cost of living, overpopulation and a lack of balance between work, family and health. This was confirmed by a recently published report showing that Maltese workers are far more stressed than workers in other European countries. Stress is further increased by traffic which, instead of easing, is becoming more congested. He said that workers should not be treated merely as a number in the economy, but as people who have a right to health, dignity, time with their family and a better quality of life. That is why the Partit Nazzjonalista is proposing that every worker in Malta should have the right to regular screening of their physical and mental health, paid for by the State. This proposal, announced by the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista in Selmun on 1 May, represents a shift in the way we think about health: from a system that reacts when people fall ill to one that prevents illness. This screening would be provided through the existing healthcare services and integrated into the National Health Park in Selmun, a project that places prevention, rehabilitation and mental health at the centre of health policy. This is the policy that puts the worker at the centre. This is the policy that will give Malta and Gozo A Fresh Start. Justin Schembri said that quality of life begins with education: with good schools, respected educators, supported students and families that have peace of mind about their children’s future. He said that the Partit Nazzjonalista has always believed in education as the greatest investment in Malta’s future. When it was in government, the PN built new schools, modernised educational infrastructure and opened up more opportunities for students. That is why a Nationalist Government will reintroduce a serious programme of investment in schools, with a clear commitment: one new school every year. These will be modern, sustainable and inclusive schools, built to green standards, with renewable energy and infrastructure adapted to the needs of all children. The PN will also introduce a system of continuous preventive maintenance so that schools are kept in good condition throughout the year. Justin Schembri also recalled that the PN will give a 25% increase in stipends to all students who continue studying after compulsory education, an additional grant to Gozitan students studying in Malta, and will raise stipends for students in the health sector to €1,000, equivalent to the minimum wage.. He said that a Nationalist Government will also invest in teachers, LSEs, KGEs and child carers, review the curriculum and assessment system, strengthen digital and vocational skills, and prepare students for new and innovative sectors such as fintech, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and an economy based on added value. A Nationalist Government wants to give education A Fresh Start – and give young people A Fresh Start. Bernice Bonello spoke about young people’s quality of life and said that it is not enough for the economy to grow if young people do not feel that they can build a future in their own country. She said that many young people today are studying, working and trying to build their lives, yet still feel stuck because of the cost of living, rental and property prices, traffic, pressure on mental health, overdevelopment and the lack of open spaces. Bernice Bonello said that the PN wants a Malta where young people have a realistic chance to study, work, rent or buy a home, build a family and live with dignity. That is why the PN is proposing more support for students, more investment in education, quality jobs and modern economic sectors that create real careers, not merely jobs on paper. She also said that young people need a country where they can breathe. That is why the Partit Nazzjonalista wants to invest once again in the environment, in open spaces, in less pollution, less traffic and greater attention to mental health. Here, she referred to the mass transport system that a Nationalist Government will start in its first 100 days, saying that this should begin to address the traffic problem that has worsened in recent years. Bernice Bonello also mentioned the importance of ensuring that existing open spaces are properly maintained and not left to deteriorate, only for a Minister to decide years later to carry out the necessary works and then go and cut the ribbon. This is not how we should take care of our open spaces, which are also integral to people’s physical and mental health. The PN candidates said that the Labour Government has left a more suffocated country, with greater pressure on roads, schools, health services, rents, infrastructure and communities. By contrast, the PN is presenting a vision that places people at the centre: workers, students, young people, families and the elderly. The Partit Nazzjonalista believes that quality of life is not an election slogan, but about how much time you have left for your family, how much peace of mind you have, how many open spaces you have where you can rest, how safe you feel and whether you feel you have a future in your own country. This is the vision of the Partit Nazzjonalista: A Fresh Start for workers, A Fresh Start in education, A Fresh Start for young people, A Fresh Start for Malta and Gozo. 05.05.2026
